UFC 71 Recap - UFC 71 ResultsUFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson took place on May 26th, 2007 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event for the night featured light heavyweight champion Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell defending his title against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. UFC 71 Match 1 (Light Heavyweight)Wilson Gouveia - 28 yrs., 6’1”, 204 lbs., fighting out of Brazil
Round 1 - It only takes the Vegas bunch about 30 seconds to start booing. Man, I wish these people would take a cue from the PRIDE audiences, but that’s just wishful thinking on my part. Gouveia has his guard down, and he’s daring Marrero to trade blows with him. Gouveia with a big leg kick which causes Marrero to wince in pain. A second leg kick drops him, but he manages to bounce right back up and then get dropped by yet another. Gouveia with a knee, and he goes for a guillotine choke. Gouveia mounts his opponent. Marrero is forced to tap, and Gouveia wins his third fight in a row. Winner: Wilson Gouveia by submission at 3:06 of the first round. UFC 71 Match 2 (Lightweight)Din Thomas - 30 yrs., 5’10”, 155 lbs., fighting out of the U.S. Thomas made his MMA debut in 1998 when Stephens was only 12 years old. This is Stephens’ UFC debut. Round 1 - Thomas gets a takedown after setting it up with the jab. Thomas moves from the guard to side control. He tries to mount, but Stephens forces him back into guard. Thomas with a few elbows from the top. Back in side control. Thomas rolls his opponent over and gets his back. Thomas works on a rear naked choke, but Stephens does a nice job of defending. Stephens eventually slips out near the end of the bout and throws some bombs down on Thomas. Both men on their feet and trading as the round comes to an end. Lots of action in this one. Round 2 - Stephens comes right out and goes for a spinning backfist. Stephens shows off his stand-up skills. Thomas goes for a takedown but then opts to pull guard. Stephens throwing punches from the top. Thomas brings his leg up and places it across the face of Stephens, grabs his arm and then cinches in an armbar. Stephens lifts him up and deposits him onto the mat, but Thomas holds on. Stephens is forced to tap in his first UFC match. Winner: Din “DinYero” Thomas by submission at 2:44 of round two. UFC 71 Match 3 (Light Heavyweight)Alan Belcher - 23 yrs., 6’2”, 205 lbs., United States Round 1 - Salmon immediately looks for a takedown, but Belcher moves out of the way. Salmon shoots in again and Belcher gets a guillotine choke. He jumps up and wraps his legs around Salmon’s waist. Salmon slams him to the mat, but Belcher hangs on. Salmon is forced to tap. Winner: Alan “The Talent” Belcher by submission at :53 of the first round. UFC 71 Match 4 (Light Heavyweight)James Irvin - 28 yrs., 6’2”, 204 lbs., United States Round 1 - Irvin drives his opponent back with a punch, then takes him to the ground with a leg kick. Irvin tries to follow up, but Silva does a nice job of holding on. Back on their feet, Irvin gets a guillotine. Silva with a takedown, and he mounts. Referee Herb Dean suddenly steps in as Irvin groans in pain. The match is stopped due to a leg injury suffered by Irvin during the final takedown. Winner: Thiago Silva due to referee stoppage (injury) at 1:06 of round one. UFC 71 Match 5 (Middleweight)Chris Leben - 26 yrs., 5’11”, 185 lbs., United States Round 1 - Leben comes out throwing and chases Starnes around the octagon. Leben misses a kick and falls down, but he pops right back up. Starnes with a nice leg kick. Leben misses with a kick and Starnes gets the takedown. He can’t do much, thought, and they eventually work back to their feet. As the round draws to a close, Starnes begins connecting with some punches. Round 2 - Starnes looks to touch gloves at the start of the round, and Leben lunges at him. Both men circle and look for an opening. Starnes lands a right and then gets the takedown. Starnes connects with a few punches on the ground, but he eventually allows Leben to get back to his feet. Starnes looks exhausted. Leben keeps throwing punches and connects with a couple. Starnes fires back as the round ends. Round 3 - Both men come out swinging. Leben hurts his opponent with a body kick. Starnes goes down and pulls Leben into his guard. Starnes is breathing from the mouth and looks completely gassed. Starnes goes for an armbar, but Leben easily escapes. Leben on top, but Starnes reverses. Leben stays active, throwing punches from his back. Starnes gets up. When Leben tries to do the same, Starnes gets a guillotine and mounts. Leben forces him into half guard, and then escapes the hold entirely. The fight ends with both men throwing punches on the ground. Winner: The judges score the bout 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision , Kalib Starnes. UFC 71 Match 6 (Light Heavyweight)Keith Jardine - 31 yrs., 6’2”, 205 lbs., United States This is Alexander’s UFC debut. After his win over Forrest Griffin, Jardine believed he should have been matched up against someone of greater stature. Round 1 - After feeling each other out, Jardine catches his opponent with a left hook and knocks him down. He tries to end the fight, but Alexander quickly recovers and forces a clinch. With his opponent backed up against the fence, Alexander throws a right hand from the clinch. It connects, as do several more thudding right hands. Jardine eats an uppercut and falls to the mat. He has nowhere to go! Alexander swarms with knees and punches. Referee Steve Mazagatti jumps in and calls an end to the bout. Winner: Houston “The Assassin” Alexander by KO at :48 of the first round. UFC 71 Match 7 (Middleweight)Ivan Salaverry - 36 yrs., 6’, 184 lbs., Canada Round 1 - Salaverry works the leg kicks. Martin advances. They grapple against the cage, and Martin goes for a slam. Salaverry blocks it. Martin tries for another takedown and gets it. He gets the back of Salaverry and starts pounding him in the back of the skull. The referee stops the fight. Winner: Terry Martin by TKO at 2:04 of the first round. UFC 71 Match 8 (Welterweight)Karo Parisyan - 24 yrs., 5’10”, 170 lbs., United States (originally from
Armenia) Parisyan - “I’m tryin’ to do a highlight reel on Josh Burkman. I’m tryin’ to do some magic on him and get my title shot.” Round 1 - Burkman is swinging for the fences. Karo shows much-improved stand-up. Burkman keeps changing his stance. Parisyan catches him with a right. Karo with a right leg kick. Burkman with a takedown. Karo back on his feet. Parisyan with a wicked judo throw. Back on their feet, Karo works for a kimura, but Burkman shows skill in avoiding it. Round 2 - Karo with a right hand. Burkman continues to look for the knockout. Karo starts connecting more. With a minute and a half remaining, Burkman is starting to look fatigued. Burkman with his hands down. Karo is picking him apart. Round 3 - Burkman comes out throwing bombs once again. Nice exchange between the two men. Grappling against the fence. Burkman picks up Karo and slams him down. They work back to their feet, and Karo sweeps the legs of his opponent and goes for a kimura. He can’t get it, but he then starts trying to set up another big judo throw. Burkman escapes as the round draws to a close. Winner: The judges rule the contest 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, Karo “The Heat” Parisyan. UFC 71 Match 9 (Light Heavyweight Championship)Quinton Jackson - 28 yrs., 6’1”, 205, Irvine, California, pro record of
26-6.
Big reaction for both men. Jackson wears his rumble chain to the ring, pausing to howl from time to time. Round 1 - Jackson stalks Liddell and keeps the pressure on. Liddell is constantly moving. Both men are feeling each other out. Rampage motions for Chuck to come on and fight. Jackson with a right hand. Liddell with a jab. Liddell with a left hook to the body. At the same time, Jackson counters with a right hook to the jaw of the champion. Liddell is down! Rampage on top. The crowd is going crazy! Liddell goes limp and Big John McCarthy stops the fight. We have a new light heavyweight champion. Winner: Quinton “Rampage” Jackson by KO at 1:53 of the first round. After the fight, Dan Henderson comes into the ring. He’s the PRIDE welterweight and middleweight champion. A match between the two men is announced in order to unify the belts. See also: |
